While each supplement serves a different function to the body, proper use will vary among them.
The biggest variation among supplements is the ideal time in which they should be taken. Nutritionists say morning is the best suited for Iron, Vitamin B, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E. Later in the morning and the early afternoon, minerals such as Iodine and Zinc recommended. Optimally, these minerals should be taken with food. Going into the evening, it is now the best time to take Vitamin D, Vitamin K, and Fish Oil supplements. The D and K work best with dietary fats, which are provided by the fish oil. Ideally, these should be taken with a meal. Later in the evening, and into the night, minerals Calcium and Magnesium should be taken as a package deal, as they work well together. It is especially important to take these two far away from taking Iron, as this may cancel out absorption. In addition, this is the best time to take a probiotic, as the stomach should be clear by this time.
It is not recommended that supplements be taken with a hot drink such as coffee or tea, as the caffeine can inhibit absorption in the body. Washing the pills down with water is preferred. It is also important to abide by the recommended dosage, and consult with your doctor to ensure supplement combinations are safe and effective.
