Fasting Mimicking Diet

Fasting Mimicking Diet

You may have heard me recommending a fasting-mimicking diet, or FMD, on various occasions.

Key Points

You may have heard me recommending a fasting-mimicking diet, or FMD, on various occasions.

  • The Fasting-Mimicking Diet (FMD) is a plant-based diet designed to mimic the effects of fasting on the body while still providing necessary nutrients. It consists of specific formulations of vegetable-based soups, energy bars, energy drinks, chip snacks, tea, and a supplement high in minerals, vitamins, and essential fatty acids.
  • The FMD is typically followed for 5 continuous days, with day 1 providing approximately 4600 kJ (11% protein, 46% fat, and 43% carbohydrate) and days 2 to 5 providing approximately 3000 kJ (9% protein, 44% fat, and 47% carbohydrate) per day.
  • The FMD has been studied in various clinical trials and has shown potential benefits in terms of metabolic risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease, as well as age-related diseases and mortality.
  • The FMD has been associated with changes in biological age, as estimated based on clinical chemistry measurements. It has been found to decrease biological age in some individuals, potentially leading to improvements in life expectancy and reduced mortality risk.
  • The FMD has been compared to other diets, such as the Mediterranean Diet, and has shown comparable or superior effects on cardiometabolic risk factors in overweight and obese hypertensive subjects.

  • Can Diet Reverse Heart Disease?

Heart Disease Diet can contribute to reversing heart disease, particularly when it addresses the root causes of atherosclerosis like inflammation, insulin resistance, and oxidative stress. Clinical trials have demonstrated measurable plaque regression with intensive dietary intervention. However, diet alone may not be sufficient for everyone, especially those with advanced disease, genetic risk factors, or significant…

  • What Causes Heart Disease?

Heart Disease Heart disease is caused by damage to the blood vessels and heart muscle that accumulates over time. While cholesterol often receives the most attention, the actual disease process is driven by a combination of chronic inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, oxidative stress, and arterial damage. These factors interact to create atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque…

  • Why Is Heart Disease The Leading Cause Of Death?

Heart Disease Heart disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide because it develops silently over decades, is driven by common modern lifestyle factors, and is often detected too late requiring invasive intervention. The cardiovascular system is uniquely vulnerable to the cumulative effects of inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and arterial damage. Unlike many other diseases, heart…
