The heart is one of the most complex organs in the body that acts as the power source for your circulatory system. The heart is equipped with valves to ensure that blood is flowing through the four chambers of the heart correctly. In cases of valvular disease, the blood flow is compromised, which can lead to an increased likelihood of developing more severe conditions. At the Integrative Cardiology Center of Long Island, our holistic cardiologist in Nassau County is trained to identify functional problems in the heart to take the critical steps to keep your heart functioning properly. What is Valvular Disease?

The heart is composed of four chambers and four valves that control blood flow through the heart. When the heart beats, blood is pumped through the valves by squeezing the chambers. The heart valves open in one direction to allow the blood to flow forward, and in between beats, they close to prevent blood from flowing backward. Valvular disease occurs when there is damage to any of the valves. Valvular disease can be present at birth but can occur in adults due to many conditions and causes. Some heart valve problems can include the following:

  • Stenosis – The heart valve does not open enough and blocks blood flow.
  • Regurgitation – Blood leaks through the blood in the wrong direction.

When the heart valves fail to work correctly, the heart has to work harder to compensate for reduced blood flow. Over time, valvular disease can progress, and the following symptoms can appear:

  • Shortness of breath.
  • Edema.
  • Palpitations.
  • Dizziness.
  • Weakness
  • Chest discomfort.
  • Weight Gain

Consulting with a holistic cardiologist in Nassau County can help you address your symptoms and determine the appropriate treatment. Treatment for valvular disease will depend on the severity of your condition. Our team will work closely with you to treat your condition using evidence-based care and functional medicine.
