Everyone recognizes that severe, crushing chest pain is a potential sign of a heart attack, but other types of cardiovascular issues have far more subtle symptoms. Unfortunately, not all heart problems come along with clear warning signs. At Integrative Cardiology Center of Long Island, our team wants to help patients become aware of the signs of different cardiovascular issues so they can avoid them in the future.
Chest Pressure
May Indicate – Valvular Heart Disease, Coronary Artery Disease, Atherosclerosis
One of the most common signs of heart problems is discomfort in the chest. If you have a clogged artery or are having a heart attack, you may feel tightness, pressure, or pain in the chest. This feeling may last longer than a few minutes. If it’s temporary pain, it’s likely not an issue with your heart. However, you should not let chest pain go unchecked.
Dizziness or Lightheadedness
Several things can make you feel dizzy or faint, but if you suddenly feel unsteady and lightheaded and have chest pain or shortness of breath, do not hesitate to contact your doctor. This could be a sign of a drop in your blood pressure.
Extreme Fatigue or Exhaustion
May Indicate – Congestive Heart Failure, Valvular Heart Disease, Coronary Artery Disease
Several conditions and activities can cause fatigue, but extreme, unexplained exhaustion can signify that your heart is not pumping blood well or is encountering blockage or valve issues.
Sleep Apnea
May Indicate – Arrhythmia, Congestive Heart Failure, or Coronary Artery Disease
Snoring a little bit is perfectly normal, but loud snoring that sounds like gasping can be a sign of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea causes you to stop breathing for short moments several times throughout the night. This can put added stress on your heart.
Weakness in your Extremities
May Indicate – Atherosclerosis
Weakness in the extremities can be a type of fatigue associated with heart problems. Weakness can go hand in hand with symptoms of shortness of breath and lowered exercise tolerance.
