There are many reasons as to why not getting enough sleep can cause heart issues. Research shows that those who sleep too little have interruptions with natural processes such as glucose metabolism, blood pressure regulation, and inflammation. When these cannot take place as they naturally should, it can quickly begin to damage your heart. Those who suffer from sleep apnea, a condition that causes people to wake up frequently throughout the night, are especially vulnerable to heart problems.

Sometimes, making a few lifestyle changes is enough to improve your sleeping habits and get your heart health back on track. Studies recommend that those between the ages of 18 and 64 get between 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Those over the age of 65 should get between 7-8. - Try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day.
- If you must take one, limit naps to between 15 and 20 minutes.
- Spend more time outside in the daylight.
- Avoid bright screens 1-2 hours before bedtime.
- Don’t drink caffeine at night.
- Limit alcohol intake.
