September 29th is World Heart Day, and at Integrative Cardiology Center of Long Island, we want to make sure your heart health is a top priority. World Heart Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness for Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), including heart disease and stroke, which contributes to 17.9 million deaths globally each year making it the leading cause of death around the world. At the Integrative Cardiology Center of Long Island, we want to help you give your heart the absolute best care it deserves as well as make sure that you take care of yourself.
Lifestyle Adjustments:
Your heart is a vital organ located at the center of your body. It pumps blood throughout the body to supply oxygen and nutrients and remove carbon dioxide. There are a variety of ways you can be heart-healthy and measures you can take to help reduce your risk of developing CVD. Here are some lifestyle choices you can make to help protect your heart:
- Stay on top of your health: Regularly visiting a doctor can help you maintain good health or alert you about possible conditions, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or even diabetes. Knowing whether or not you need to pay extra attention to your health can help increase your quality of life in the long run!
- Quit smoking – The harmful chemicals that come with smoking cigarettes, real or electronic, can be very damaging to your heart
- Be physically active – Get up and move! Try to be active for at least 30 minutes a day.
- Eat a nutritious diet – Eat less salt, and saturated fats and limit your alcohol intake.
- Get a good night’s sleep – Make sure to get at least 7 hours of sleep a night. It is important to stay well-rested!
- Take care of your mental health – Depression and other mental illnesses can cause stress on the heart and get worse over time. Get any necessary treatment and focus on doing more of what you love.
