The supplement industry is a booming business, with an annual expense exceeding $37 billion in the US annually. However, in addition to quality, ingredients, sourcing and potential uses of supplements, a consumer also needs to understand the timing of their use. Many patients spend a significant amount of money for poor quality preparations, potentially placing themselves at risk, or taking too many supplements, often incorrectly.
Most vitamins are often taken with breakfast. Fat-soluble vitamins, such as A, D, E and K are best taken with a meal containing healthy fat, to increase absorption. Water-soluble vitamins can be taken with water only (vitamins B, C)
Unlike vitamins, minerals are better if taken later in a day., Magnesium and calcium, often used together for bone health, brain health, relaxation, membrane stabilization (in patients with palpitations and arrhythmias), heart failure are usually better if taken before bedtime. Aside from supporting above mentioned conditions, calcium also brings other benefits, such as working as a sleep aid. Calcium aids in the release of tryptophan, which produces melatonin, a natural anti-inflammatory hormone that helps us fall and stay asleep. Calcium before bed also decreases the risk of mineral deficiency. Many magnesium preparations provide direct neurologic relaxation effects. A quick way to get magnesium and relax is to use an Epsom salt bath before bedtime!
Vitamins and minerals, when used as advised by trained practitioners, can improve your well-being and vitality as a whole. As a holistic physician trained in functional medicine, Dr. Druz understands that much of our food in this day and age is very processed, and raised in unnatural environments, so we might be missing the important vitamins and nutrients that we need. Also, higher stress levels and less sunlight during the winter months, are placing additional demands for proper nutrients. Taking supplements will help you maintain your health, while improving your energy, stress, and sleep patterns.
